Hi, I'm Fiona. Whilst retraining at College in Art and Design I discovered a love of creating art from driftwood and a few years later I started my own artwork business, Drifted into Design. I produce wall art, brooches, driftwood hearts and textile seascapes as well as the occasional driftwood mirror and other textile pieces.
After living in Fife for 16 years I moved to East Sutherland in July 2019 to a former crofthouse. It is an area that I know well and with which I have many family connections. I am influenced by the irresistible beaches in both areas, with their endless supply of beautiful materials.
I am a regular beachcomber whatever the weather and I gather the driftwood and other materials I use myself, never failing to be intrigued by the mysterious history of each piece. The shapes I find dictate how it will be used as I work with the materials just as they are found (except for sometimes having to sand down sharp edges). Duplication is impossible as no two seashore found objects are the same, due to the tumbling action of the sea. The layering and addition of leaves, textiles, paper or metal act as embellishments which intensify the colours and textures of the wood, slate, glass or pottery. The artworks hopefully convey the transient nature of the materials whilst also preserving them.
In addition to my driftwood work I also create textile seascapes which are particularly influenced by the wild and enthralling north-west coastline of Scotland, where the colours of the sea range from palest aquamarine to indigo, with splashes of white waves and misty Hebridean islands in the distance. I use both hand and machine stitching on the seascapes which are made with mainly recycled fabrics and found objects. I also have merchandising such as coasters and notebooks linked to my textile work.
I have exhibited at Pittenweem Arts Festival along with other art events and I have sold my work through several art galleries and craft shops.
