Hi, I’m Tania, a Dorset Button maker, designer, tutor, hand knitter and podcaster. I was brought up in Dorset and my work is rooted in and inspired by the heritage craft of the handmade Dorset Button, a cottage industry in Dorset, on the South Coast of England which was at its’ peak between 1620 and 1850.
Now living on the Isle of Skye, off the North West Coast of Scotland, my creativity is inspired by the landscape and history of both of these places. From Dorset’s stunning rolling countryside and dramatic Jurassic coastline to Skye’s majestic mountains and rocky shores. Each linked through their rich geological features with their own distinctive breeds of sheep that have long shaped the land.
My creative business, TJFrog, aims to contribute to keeping alive the traditional skill of the handmade Dorset Button. Now classed as a heritage craft I build on some of the historical designs and use traditional Dorset Buttony techniques to create contemporary buttons, jewellery and knitting and crochet accessories for today’s lifestyle.
I hand make all the Dorset Buttons working with a variety of luxury yarns many of which are either grown, spun or hand dyed in Scotland or Dorset. From time to time I also add cotton, silk, embroidery thread ribbon or fabric as well as beads to add extra colour, texture, depth and sparkle. Much attention is given to sourcing a variety of different yarns to best bring the design to life as well as showcasing the nature of the yarn.
