Hi, I’m Greg Dobson and I have been living in the area of Lochalsh for the last 15 years as both a teacher and a practicing artist. I am part of the local art scene & further afield using a variety of mixed media and genre to present my work.
My interest in paper folding, nature and recycling has inspired my metalwork sculpture. I progressed from making a three-dimensional surface with a few folds from flat sheet out of paper, to card and now steel, both recycled and new. My work is inspired by the nature and scenery of Skye and Lochalsh and ranges in size from a small beetle right up to a life size sea eagle as well as a few local public sculptures.
Getting a sense of movement from my sculpture is also important to me, as well as the shadows that they cast, particularly the swallow rings inspired by the annual migration of these amazing birds to our shores. Some of the sea life that I make has been fashioned from recycled stainless steel dishwashers and I am always on the lookout for new challenges to create something from someone else's rubbish.
All the work you see here is hand cut and welded using cutting equipment and every piece is unique with some amazing colours and surface textures being developed from the heat treatment used. Each piece, unless it is stainless steel, is then lacquered to lock in the surface patina and gives a durable protective finish. My work is forever evolving and I am always open to suggestions to create diverse and unusual art.
