Stomper McEwan

Hi, I'm Virginia and I'm a creative from Stempster, Caithness. The North of Scotland has been my home for most of my life, spending my childhood in Orkney and then settling in Caithness after a 15-year period in Lincolnshire. Being an artist was never part of my plan, having spent my formative years swinging between wanting to be a palaeontologist or a long distance lorry driver. But life had other plans and I found myself becoming a teacher, a musician, an author, an artist, and a photographer.

All my artwork is sourced and produced environmentally. Painfully conscious of the struggling climate and watching bins overflowing, I began saving cartons and boxes to upcycle them as canvases. Off-cuts of wood from furniture, Easter Egg boxes, you name it, I reused it! This I called #ThereIsNoSuchThingAsRubbish. I also paint on slices of felled trees from our little wood here at Stempster and my photography is almost exclusively from my little corner of paradise. A lifelong fan of the fantastical, folklore, history, and legends, the majority of my artwork contains whimsical homages to mythology.
