Hello, I'm Dave originally from Glasgow but moved to the delights of Highland Perthshire when 8 years old and immediately fell in love with the vast open air space to be explored.
Up until the last 5 years I led a very active life; I served in the RAF, was a member of the mountain rescue team at Leuchars in Fife Scotland, I owned and operated a small lobster creel boat on Skye and then with my wife helped run Scottish Youth Hostels. My favourite hostel was Durness, open space, sea, beaches and amazingly dark nights.
Then 5 years ago my life changed drastically when I developed rheumatoid arthritis and in no time became almost immobile. So at only 54 I obviously had to adjust, I won’t lie it has been tough and my mental health suffered a bit.
Then a couple of years ago I read an article about an ex Navy man on Harris who, after a car accident, had found making small cottages from driftwood was a life saver for him. That got me thinking and I thought why not try.
I have my own “Wee Shed” at the bottom of the garden that is my favourite place never mind saviour. It was there I began, with no clue of how to go about it but muddled through, learning as I went. I began to use recycled materials such as wood from a builders scrap pile, and then so many other little things that pop up in my pieces.
During the big lockdown of 2020 with people spending more time on social media I built up a small local client base, some of who sent them all over the world as gifts, this led to more requests...
So here I am now on this exciting journey and unlocking all sorts of creative ideas in my brain, giving me a whole new lease and joy of life. It has all been possible in no small part to my amazing wife and daughter giving me so much support when I needed it.
The funds I receive from any sales now I like to cover the cost of making it and anything over goes to RAFA the charity supporting ex RAF personnel.
Please do enjoy viewing my pieces and if they take your eye it would be a pleasure to sell them to you.
