Hi, I’m Ola MacRae, and I run Leavesandlichen.

I was brought up in the beautiful Island of Skye and now live in a place that overlooks the world renowned Loch Ness, overlooking Urquhart Castle.

When in school, I always loved art and my career choices were between following my desire to design and a career in nursing. Nursing won. After retirement, I joined an art class and soon felt the need to diversify and explore more ways to express myself artistically. The vivid and changing colours of nature influence everything I create. I like nothing better than being creative, whether it’s designing and making jewellery, painting, making cards or painting coasters. Nothing makes me happier than when somebody likes what I create.

I like the unusual, and this is reflected in the Bezels I choose to use as pendants, rings and earrings. I fill the bezel cups with a mix of various vivid colours and they are finished with coats of resin to give a brilliant, lustrous, hard wearing shine to the uniquely finished pendants. In some, I include heather, flower parts and lichen, which I pick locally in the Highlands of Scotland. Once dried, they are placed on top of the dried colours, then embedded within the resin. These pendants are unique and cannot be duplicated, so you can be sure you will never see another which is identical.

I use a variety of paint products in my hand painted designs, usually on ceramic tiles, but more recently on canvas.

My philosophy – we are always learning something new. Put new skills into practice to enhance our own and hopefully, others’ lives.
