A ceramic rubber duck with blue honeycomb design and finished with mother of pearl lustre for an iridescent sheen.
The inspiration for the ducks came from the makers' son who loves going to the park to see the ducks. Each duck has her Celtic Carrot stamp on it and a little X from him.
After making a plaster mould of a rubber duck, Sarah slip casts it in porcelain. When the clay is dry enough to remove from the mould, she tidies up the edges then paints the underglaze colours on. After some more drying time, she carves the vines and leaves into the surface - a method known as "scraffito". Then the duck is ready for four firings. The first firing (bisque at 1000°C) transforms the clay into ceramic, followed by a glaze firing (at 1260°C).The final two firings are for the mother of pearl lustre and the small bee print (at 790°C).
Then the little duck is ready to fly to it's new home!
