A porcelain cup with green background and white leaf vines with gold lustre. Finished with an iridescent sheen.
Each mug is handmade by Sarah, and decorated with underglaze watercolour detail. After the underglaze is applied, I then scrape the leaves out, a method called 'scraffito'. Then the cup is put through four firings, to a maximum of 1260 degrees celsius: the first firing turns the clay into ceramic and is then followed with a glaze firing. The last two firings are to add the mother of pearl lustre, which gives the irridescent finish, followed by another firing for the gold lustre. These firings are done outside because of any fumes released from the lustre. The whole process from start to finish takes about a week and is a true labour of love. I am always excited to open the kiln (called Phil!) and see the finished product!
The mug holds 250ml. Not suitable for the dishwasher or microwave due to the lustres.
Sarah can personalise mugs, please contact us if you have a request.
