Porcelain Leaf Mug

A porcelain mug with green underglaze, white leaves and an iridescent sheen.

Each mug is handmade by Sarah, and decorated with underglaze watercolours. The leaves are carved into the mug, a technique called 'scraffito'! The mug is put through three firings, to a maximum of 1260 degrees celcius: the first firing turns the clay into ceramic and is then followed with a glaze firing. The last firing is to add the mother of pearl lustre which gives the iridescent finish. This firing is done outside because of any fumes released from the lustre. The whole process from start to finish takes about a week and is a true labour of love. Sarah is always excited to open the kiln and see the finished product!

Not suitable for dishwasher or microwave due to the lustres.
