Wood You Believe It

Hello, I’m Dave and have worked as a self-employed craftsman, joiner and builder for over thirty years. I live at Kilbride on the beautiful island of Skye with my wife Alison, in a house which I built myself (with a little help from my friends). We enjoy wonderful views of Blà Bheinn and the red Cuillin hills when the weather is good.

During lockdown, I built a new workshop to develop my ideas for original wooden items, which I make using a mixture of locally-found wood such as driftwood and fallen branches, together with unusual offcuts of high-quality hardwood timbers, sourced mainly from a supplier in Yorkshire, my home county.

I am now pleased to offer some of my creations as ‘Wood You Believe It’.

Experimenting with different shapes and textures, I create rustic and individual pieces such as coat hook sets, shelves, mug racks, tables, planters and bird tables. My work involves unusual shapes but is always finished to a very high standard.

I love the natural colours and contours of timber and often use yew as a base. It can grow in fantastic ways with amazing bark but has a fine grain that takes on a lovely, honeyed colour when finished. I also work with many other kinds of wood native to the UK (including elm and oak) and sometimes combine timber with slate or stone, using polished Skye marble.

I am happy to produce bespoke pieces, perhaps to fit a particular design scheme or space in your home. Do contact me to discuss your ideas and I will quote on request.

I hope you enjoy browsing my work on the Highland Hiddle website.
