Hi, my name is Jan and I’m of Anglo-Dutch heritage, living and crafting on the shores of Loch Carron. I moved to the Highlands in the early eighties to work and settled here in Lochcarron. After 40 years working for the NHS I retired and announced I wanted to make buttons from antlers for the Icelandic knitwear my wife, Sigga, creates.

From buttons I progressed to antler tine kilt pins which the Lochcarron Weavers were happy to sell to complement their kilts. Then came the key rings and my craftwork evolved into combining antlers with wood to produce jewellery stands, keyring racks, coat racks and, of course, the ubiquitous antler handled walking sticks and crooks. All of what I’ve made has been sold in local craft shops but in these changed days I’ve migrated online, however the Carron Pottery is my chosen outlet for the walking sticks.

I source the red and roe deer antlers from a local estate and the elm, oak and beech wood I need from a woodsman in the village. It doesn’t come more local to the Highlands than that. The wood for the sticks is mostly hazel which I coppice from my orchard above the house or from nearby woods. For a limited number of items I use white tail deer antler tips that I’ve managed to source elsewhere. Finally, I’m happy to consider commissions if what you see here isn’t quite what you are looking for. Just get in touch via Highland Hiddle contact form.
