Full Moon Felting

Hi, I’m Philly Hare, the founder of Full Moon Felting.

Now in my early sixties, with three adult sons and a new grandson, I have time to be creative, and to focus on what makes me happiest and most at ease with myself. And that involves running, hiking, being out in all weathers… and felting.

I now live and work right up on the northernmost tip of the Isle of Lewis – which is itself the northernmost Island in the Scottish Outer Hebrides. The cottage where I live, in the crofting community of Ness, is just ten minutes’ walk away from the beautiful dunes of Eoropie Beach – and half an hour’s run round the dramatic headland of the Butt of Lewis to the lighthouse. In summer the machair is covered in wild flowers, and all through the year we can see seals, dolphins, wild geese, curlews, lapwings – and so much more wildlife. The weather is not for the faint-hearted – but its changing moods, and the awesome sunrises and sunsets, bring constant inspiration.

It’s the light, colours and textures of this amazing place that I seek to reflect and honour in my work. I create original and contemporary felt ‘paintings’ which draw on the sea-, sky- and landscapes that I experience every day on my runs and walks. Each of my feltings is unique and takes many hours to create. I use the finest of materials – most frequently soft merino wool and mulberry silk – to try to capture the sense of freedom which is what drew me to this place. I select wool of colours and textures which reflect the natural wildness of this remote island. The silk picks up the gleam of sunlight or moonlight on water or clouds. I hope you sense that too when you see my work.

My feltings are supplied READY TO FRAME in an off white (or occasionally black) window mount, as seen in the photo. The mount will fit a standard off-the-shelf frame. The frame is NOT supplied - this keeps your total costs down, avoids the risk of damage, and enables you to choose your style and colour. You can also then decide whether to use glass (to protect the felt) or not (so that the textures and colours of the materials can be fully enjoyed).
