Hi, I’m Ansgar Vinke. I have worked professionally with wood for over 25 years, either as a cabinet maker, which is my original time served trade, or as a joiner, and now wood turner. I did work with wood even before that, just rather unprofessionally ;)
Over the years, I literally “worked” my way from my hometown in Northern Germany, via Berlin and Vienna, ultimately to Scotland.
In 2005 I sold all my unnecessary possessions, loaded the rest in my old van which was now my home and I drove to Scotland, intending to stay for a few months or maybe even a year. I haven`t left since. For ten years I travelled all over Scotland, living and working in Oban, Stirling, Orkney, Aberdeen, the Isle of Arran, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness and the Isle of Mull.
In 2015 I ended up in Fodderty, near Dingwall, and finally had the opportunity to establish a workshop. In 2019 I launched my business “Fodderty Woodturning”, mostly selling at Craft fairs and Community Markets.
The craft :
While living in Berlin and working as a cabinetmaker, making bespoke furniture, I met a local master wood turner, and became fascinated with the craft. Over a few years I was informally taught by him and got really hooked. His motto was, ”No matter how beautiful the piece of wood is, no matter how pleasing the shape you have created, as long as there’s a single tool or sanding mark visible, it is nothing but firewood yet and not allowed to leave the workshop!”
Harsh, but effective. I’m still working on that!
However, my travelling then disrupted any further development, until I moved to Fodderty.
Having had established my workshop in Fodderty, I started to source wood locally, store and air dry it for a few years until ready for use. I also use reclaimed wood, be it railway sleepers, old structural beams, or even lawn bowls. For my finishes I only use natural oils and waxes, no colouring, and no varnish or chemicals. I only use wood in its original shape, the piece often dictates the shape and purpose of the finished product, as I don`t laminate any pieces.
