Hi, I'm Nana. When I was seven my Grannie taught me to crochet, between us we could make a whole blanket in a few evenings. I used the leftovers to make shoulder bags which I sold to my school friends. My Grannie also taught me needle tatting which is similar to lace making.
From there I learned to knit and made Aran sweaters from traditional patterns, along with my mum and aunt. We also knitted socks, scarves, mittens, and bobble hats. We sold our produce to Highland Home Industries and local craft shops.
After I married, I started my own business, Bobban Knitwear, specialising in Fisherman’s knit sweaters and cardigans using Harris wool as is used in Harris Tweed. I used a large knitting frame/machine and Linker.
When my children were small, I knitted toys for them and for charities in between making novelty cakes for children’s birthdays.
After a shoulder injury and the early onset of Rheumatoid Arthritis I had to find less physically stressful hobbies. I discovered that polymer clay modelling was similar to making novelty cakes, I now make my own polymer clay beads and Cabochons.
I found that macrame and Japanese braiding also known as Kumihimo were good exercise for my fingers which I learnt from books and online resources.
I like to recycle vintage beads from broken jewellery and enjoy rummaging around at flea markets, boot sales and charity shops.
I live in Invergordon with my husband and new puppy Finn who keeps me very busy when I’m not crafting or baking and cooking.
When I’m not crafting I like to read and listen to music, and having two sons who play guitars and keyboards, means I am never short of listening material. My other hobby is a fragrant one, I have collected miniature perfume bottles since the age of 11 and have a very large collection which fills several display cases. I am always on the lookout for rarities to add to my collection!
