A needle felted picture with needle embroidery titled Conflagration. It addresses the threat of wildfires and their relationship to global warming and changing weather patterns due to climate change. Most of us saw the terrible images of the apocalyptic skies in the US during this years wildfire season. Oregon was hit particularly badly. Severe drought and high winds fuelled the most destructive wildfire season in state history. In 2015 15 homes were lost in Oregon, in 2020 the figure stood at 4009. Roughly 1.07 million acres of land burned and the cost to fight these fires was $354 million. As the human population has increased the threat to life and livelihood from these events has also increased. Combined with severe drought and changing weather patterns these events will be increasingly more frequent. The loss of human lives will continue to increase as the size and intensity of these fires allow little time for evacuation to safety. The loss of animal life and habitat is catastrophic. None of us can forget the heartbreaking pictures of dead and injured wildlife following the Australian fires and, as our planet warms and weather changes, we will see these events coming closer to us and impacting on our lives and landscapes. The human race need to work together to support the move to renewable energy and all do our bit, however small, to recycle and reduce waste. We need to collectively put our arms around our planet and all it’s diverse species and protect and nurture it for future generations.
